Good Hope Swimming
Good Hope Swimming Club was established in 2010 from an initiative of the owner of Good Hope Private Nature Reserve, Hennie van Wyk , and a parent, Andries Brand. It was their dream that Kimberley has a swimming club that was affordable and accessible to many more children who not only wanted to swim, or showed great swimming potential, but also for those who needed to learn to swim as an important life skill.
As Mr. Brand at that time had children at St. Patrick's Christian Brother's College in Kimberley, he approached the headmaster to avail land at the school to build an indoor swimming pool that would allow for swimming throughout the year. The school then agreed to provide the facility and GHSK proceeded to build the pool there. This processes happened at just the correct time as the current coach, Ebert Kleynhans was approached to head the club as his contract with his previous club had expired and he saw the potential for GHSK to reach great heights under his leadership. Our coach, Ebert is a by a 3-time Paralympic Gold Medalist which no other club in the Northern Cape has. He holds the world record for the 50m freestyle. He also coached Charl Bouwer from Kimberley, who is the the 400m freestyle world record holder of the 2008 and 2013 Paralympics. He also coached disabled world record holder record holder Hannes-Walt de Klerk and Disabled SA record holder, Johan van Heerden. Under his leadership 20 other swimmers have represented the Northern Cape and have medaled at provincial, national & level 1, 2 & 3 events throughout SA.
The rest as we say, "is history", as the club now has 60 swimmers, having started with 9 swimmers in 2010. Of these 60 swimmers, 35 are Swim SA registered gala swimmers and continue yearly to represent the province at National Level 1, 2 and 3 and even Youth and National level - a very high achievement for any club indeed.
